My notes from UCC : history of Irish Education 1600 to 1830'S

My note takings looked further into Hedge schools and how time evolved on to the set up of Presentation schools much like my own school that I am currently teaching in. Excuse my notes but I learnt some interesting points on how hedge schools came about and the set up of national schools to Presentation school.

State sponsored schools; from the tutor policy of the late 16th century, the development of the state intervention of schools of Irish evangelisation. The tutor policy was on trying to gain control of parish schools and dissolve schools trying to build steps up to education in which reform church, the Protestant church have control of the education of the young in Ireland, a great example shown in was Queens college now known to everyone as UCC. A college itself that was under English rule. The objective and function of the tutor policy was to evangelise the population of catholics to a certain degree.

In the 18th century strong laws came in a strong evangelisation  movement in Ireland amongst the post education society, who set out to use the education system to confirm a more English way of edcation, In the early 18th century the prosecution of catholic schools masters and priests were severe but as time went on and with the development of whole system education, the Hedge system was introduced.

Hedge schools gradually became paid schools, these schools provided a broad range of subjects and included classical studies. By 1825 the goverment did a servey before the introduction of the national school system, the servey showed an immense network of small schools through out every parish in Ireland. The catholic church then began to develop its own network and with the finding of christian Brothers in 1803 and the development of the religious orders like Mercy Sisters beginning to provide education for the catholic population. But soon enough the goverment realised then its going to have an open education in this way it had to conrol it in soe way and why we have the introducation of goverment  funding national school system in the 1830's.

The the landmark comes with the introduction of the Stanely letter educational act. This laid down the way a commitee of the national board are to use the goverment annual grant and base it on a system that the schools have to apply for 'aid' so a self help system was put in place. These schools were funded but had to abide rules; these included a certain way the curriculum has to be taught, a certain bulding the school had to be within and a certain level of qualification for the teacher to teach within this system.

Over all, out of my peers I seemed to leave these lectures content and very interested in comparison to my peers. I found it insightful how we as a education system has come on in throves and I really enjoyed thsese lectures and could understand these lectures the most and relate them after hearing stories as a child about my grandmothers and mothers educational upbringing, these notes I took are all reminisnct of my childhood stories I heard
